ABOUT OLLEROS

Olleros is a very old town south east from Lima that has Inca sites and a small abandoned Inca Trail section that is not part of the ride. The word “OLLEROS” means pot manufacturers. The top trail section has a hard pack clay soil used to make the classic ceramic jars and pots that are believed to be done since in this place since the Incas. In the 1800’s Olleros had a very important role in the Peruvian Independence by producing double bottom pots in which Independence promoters used to hide letters. This double bottom pots were sent as gifts to people who played key roles in the Peruvian Independence so letters were not found.

The Olleros trail has been always used by the nomad shepherds who move with their cattle to the coast line to sell their products and also to feed the cattle on the coastal hills which get fog and are full of vegetation (free food for cattle) on the off season (June – October). Now a days the Olleros town has been partially abandoned and most of the young population is closer to the coast on barrios next to dry river beds who leave behind the farming and shepherding life.
